3 Nutrition Tips for Skin Health

The idea of nutrition affecting human skin has been around for a long time.  We know that Vitamin D absorbed through the skin affects our immune system. We know that Vitamins E and A affect our skin health and colour. We know that Vitamin C can help stop bleeding and heal wounds. 


When we look at common skin issues, we must look at what the person is eating. Acne is often treated with pharmaceuticals, when really the problem starts with someone’s fork. Eczema is linked to inflammation from foods, very often gluten and dairy, but instead steroid creams are given, creating a new problem. Psoriasis is linked to inflammation and often paired with other inflammatory issues like arthritis. What is the most common source of inflammation? The gut, from standard North American foods! 

HERE ARE MY TOP THREE NUTRITION TIPS FOR HEALTHY SKIN:

1. Healthy Fats high in Omega 3 fatty acids

Nutritious fats can nourish and hydrate the skin from the inside out. The best sources of skin-superfood fats are salmon, sardines, olives, avocados, extra virgin olive oil, walnuts and coconut.

2. Reduce inflammation on the plate

Start with adding in lots of fresh fruits and vegetables. Papaya, carrots, sweet potatoes, citrus fruits (most orangey pink fruits and veggies contain Vitamin A which nourishes the skin)  are wonderful additions. Lots of green leafy vegetables are a good staple too, and cruciferous vegetables, in order to support the liver, a common root problem of skin issues. Stay away from highly inflammatory foods like gluten, dairy, eggs, corn, soy and all processed foods.

3. Probiotic rich foods to create balance in the gut

Including sauerkraut, kimchi, homemade coconut yogurt and kefir, kombucha, and occasional soy sources like tempeh and miso (make sure it’s organic) can be a really wonderful way to populate your gut with good bacteria. A high quality probiotic supplement is also a great idea.
