3 KEYS to Postpartum Nutrition

The postpartum period is one of the most transformative times in a woman’s life. Whether you had your dream birth, or a traumatic one, depletion is something that many new mama’s experience. Between breastfeeding, sleep deprivation, and recovering your body from giving birth, it’s no wonder that new moms need some support!

While it’s filled with love and new beginnings, it can also feel overwhelming as your body heals and adjusts. Nutrition plays a critical role in recovery, energy, and mental health during this phase, yet it’s often overlooked.

Here are 3 simple yet powerful keys to postpartum nutrition that will help you feel your best:

1. Make the most of every time you eat

Make the most out of each time you are eating! If you are eating fruit, add a fat for example. If you are having a banana, add almond butter. This easy tip will help you focus on rebuilding nutrients. You can make any snack into something nutritious.

2. Always have fuel on hand!

When you are packing your baby’s diaper bag, make sure you bring a snack for you! We focus so much on the baby, that we often forget to feed ourselves too. Make sure that you always have an option for yourself that is quick and easy. Power balls, quick granola bars from Costco etc., you will find something that works for you.

3. Check your protein

Protein is essential postpartum because it also helps you increase your iron and other nutrients. You don’t need to count your macros, but just keep an eye on if you are getting enough protein or not. If you try tracking for a few days, you will have an idea where you are at. With breastfeeding you need an extra 17g of protein per day. 25g of protein per meal is a great goal to meet.
